Bryan, a kind-hearted man from Edmonton, began his active volunteer journey immediately after retiring. Since 2012, he has dedicated most of his time to organizations like Homeward Trust, Homeless Connect, Homeless Count, and Toque Tuesday. In 2015, Bryan took on the role of Sponsorship Chair on the Coordination Committee. More on iedmonton.

Bryan’s Start in Volunteering

In an interview, Bryan shared that his passion for helping people in need started in childhood. He felt deeply for those without homes or jobs. As a boy, Bryan would often ask his parents for money to give to those less fortunate. He also shared food with children from underprivileged families.

His inclination toward helping others carried into adulthood. After completing his higher education and getting married, volunteering became a significant part of his life. Bryan actively participated in events focused on assisting the less fortunate.

Bryan remarked that volunteering can be incredibly challenging. While volunteering at festivals may be enjoyable and aligned with personal interests, contributing to non-profit organizations and healthcare projects often involves stepping out of one’s comfort zone. However, he finds immense satisfaction in making a positive impact on others’ lives.

Finding Purpose and Support

Bryan sets ambitious goals in his volunteering career, often supported by his wife, who advises and encourages him. He takes pride in knowing he is making a difference and values the gratitude he receives from those he helps. For Bryan, the sense of fulfillment after accomplishing his tasks is the most rewarding aspect. He expresses deep gratitude for his good health, motivation, and the opportunity to serve others.

At times, the complexity of his volunteer work can be overwhelming. Bryan participates in various activities, including Zoom meetings and online projects. However, due to his wife’s serious health condition, he has scaled back some opportunities to stay closer to home and care for her.

Memorable Experiences at Homeward Trust

Bryan’s love for volunteering has inspired many to join him. He cherishes interacting with people from all walks of life and aiding them when needed. Among the many stories he has encountered, one stands out vividly.

A homeless man once approached Bryan, apologizing for the inconvenience while asking for money. Feeling sympathetic, Bryan offered the man a discount voucher for groceries. The gesture was heartwarming for both the recipient and Bryan himself.

In another instance, Bryan shared how he found a lifelong friend through an unexpected encounter. While volunteering with his wife at the Boyle McCauley Health Centre, an agitated man entered, shouting profanities at passersby. Bryan was the first to approach him and start a conversation. The man spoke about his rough character, past imprisonment, and fearlessness.

Bryan managed to steer the conversation toward self-improvement, and the man eventually embraced his advice. Over time, the man transformed, quitting alcohol and dedicating his life to volunteering. He even became a close family friend.

Bryan’s Philosophy on Volunteering

Bryan firmly believes that age, political views, or religious beliefs should never limit one’s capacity for compassion. He advocates for empathy and the willingness to sacrifice for those less fortunate. For Bryan, being human means showing kindness and supporting others, even in their darkest moments.
