Three dentists, three standing teams

Downtown practices tend to hand you whichever chair is free. Jasper Avenue Dental is arranged the other way round: Dr. J.R. Lizotte, Dr. Hai Nguyen and Dr. Wes Carlson each keep a permanent team of assistants and hygienists, named individually on the practice’s own pages. You are attached to one dentist and inherit his people — the same hygienist year after year, the same assistant beside the chair. Some families have kept that arrangement for more than twenty years.

Preventive: exams and cleanings at any age, fluoride, sealants, oral cancer screening, sport mouthguards and nightguards. Restorative: fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, root canals. Surgical and implant: wisdom teeth, implant placement and implant restoration — Dr. Lizotte’s implant work is what patients name most often. Periodontics: scaling and root planing first, then pocket-reduction flap surgery and regenerative grafting once bone is lost. Orthodontics: metal and clear braces and clear aligners, for adults as much as teenagers.

Technology

CAD/CAM design and chairside milling produce the crown in the building, so a single-visit restoration replaces the temporary-and-come-back routine. Imaging is high-definition digital in both 2D and 3D; the three-dimensional scan is what makes an implant plannable and an impacted wisdom tooth readable before anyone starts.

The dentists

Dr. Lizotte, an Edmonton native and University of Alberta graduate, spent years on Kindness in Action dental missions in Guatemala and Honduras and two decades in the Rotary Club of Edmonton West. Dr. Nguyen came from Vietnam as a child, broke his front teeth learning to skate, and credits the dentists who rebuilt them for his career. Dr. Carlson qualified as a mechanical engineer before turning to dentistry; patients single out how closely he follows up once treatment ends.
