The flagship of a locally owned Edmonton group
Locally owned since 2008, Smiles Dental Group runs seven offices around Edmonton; the Calgary Trail practice is the largest. Scale is the proposition: twelve general dentists in one clinic, doors open every day of the year, and an emergency line staffed around the clock — a tooth broken at midnight reaches a person, not a voicemail.
Treatments and services
Emergency: toothache, abscess, chipped and knocked-out teeth, a lost filling, urgent root canals and extractions. General and family: hygiene and checkups, tooth-coloured mercury-free fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, mouthguards, children’s dentistry. Surgical: wisdom teeth, complex extractions, implants. Cosmetic: porcelain veneers, whitening in the chair or as a take-home kit, Invisalign aligners. Jaw-joint (TMJ) treatment and sleep apnea appliances round it out; sedation dentistry is there for anyone who cannot face treatment awake. Insurance is direct-billed; the Canada Dental Care Plan is accepted.
Digital implant planning
An implant is planned on screen before anything is cut: CBCT imaging and an intraoral scanner drive both the plan and the placement, so the angle and depth of the post are settled in advance. That is what lets front-tooth implants — cases many offices decline and hand to specialists — be placed here.
The dentists
The twelve divide by procedure rather than by shift. Dr. Alva Jinn takes endodontics, extractions and implants; Dr. Karan Salwan and Dr. Danny Tan wisdom teeth and root canals, Dr. Tan working deliberately with frightened patients; Dr. Alexander Yeh cosmetic work, implants, TMJ and sleep apnea; Dr. Jim Haymour, University of Alberta 1985, surgical extractions and implants; Dr. Casey Wong restorative and surgical treatment; Dr. Bishoy Labib emergencies.
Who it suits
Anyone struck by pain on a holiday weekend; patients told elsewhere that an implant in the smile line is too risky; families wanting a child’s first checkup and an adult’s aligners under one roof. The group also runs Smiles Samaritan, a non-profit treating Edmontonians who would otherwise go without basic care.
Frequently asked questions
Can I be seen on a holiday? Yes — the clinic works every day of the year and the emergency line answers around the clock.
Will I be sent elsewhere for an implant? No: several dentists here place them, front teeth included, on CBCT-guided planning.
What helps with dental fear? Sedation dentistry, and dentists who work deliberately with anxious patients.
Which languages are spoken? English, French, Punjabi, Hindi, Arabic, Cantonese and Mandarin.
Is this the same as the other Smiles offices? It is the group’s largest; six more sit across Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park and Spruce Grove.
