Arthur Hiller
Arthur Hiller, a Canadian-American producer, actor, and director of film and television, was first and foremost an Edmonton native. Here is his inspiring story.
Arthur was born on November 22, 1923, in Edmonton to Jewish immigrants from Poland, Harry and Rose. His parents had settled in Edmonton in 1912, having previously lived in New York. Arthur was the third child in the family, following two daughters.
The Hiller family was well-established, owning a home and leading a comfortable life for the time. They founded a Jewish theater in Edmonton, where young Arthur played small roles as early as age 11.
At 18, Arthur gained military experience in the Royal Canadian Air Force. It’s no surprise that in 1941, he participated in World War II.
After returning from service, he pursued higher education at the University of Toronto. His graduation marked the beginning of a creative journey.
A Path to Cinema
Arthur’s career began with radio, a modest start that didn’t seem destined for greatness. However, even then, the seeds of ambition were likely planted.
His first significant step was directing for CBC Television. This marked the opening of opportunities that would ultimately lead Arthur to Hollywood. His talents drew the attention of industry leaders who invited him to the global center of cinema.
Arthur’s early successes included contributions to iconic projects such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Thriller, Perry Mason, and Playhouse 90.
In the 1950s, Arthur directed his first feature film, Safe Harbor. A notable early milestone was his collaboration with Disney on Miracle of the White Stallions. He also contributed to the first season of the iconic television series The Addams Family.
In 1971, Arthur directed the film Love Story, which was nominated for an Academy Award. This critically acclaimed film cemented his reputation in the film industry.
Arthur’s career continued to flourish as he both directed and acted in various productions. In 1989, he became President of the Directors Guild of America, serving a five-year term.
In 2002, Arthur Hiller was honored with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, further highlighting his remarkable achievements. Four years later, he received the prestigious title of Officer of the Order of Canada.
A Life of Achievements and Challenges
In 1999, Arthur faced a rare professional stumble, receiving a nomination for the Golden Raspberry Award for An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn. Despite this, his legacy remains untarnished by this minor blemish.
Arthur passed away in 2016 at the age of 93. He lived a long, fulfilling life, enriched by his family. Married since 1948 to Gwen, the couple had two children who later made Arthur a proud grandfather.
